Helping out in your community is an important activity that’s easy and fun!

There are many ways to get involved in your local community, so that you can make a difference in bettering the world around you and lend a helping hand to those less fortunate and in need of assistance.

Here are some ideas and resources to get you started. Then go ask your friends and family to join you in giving back to your community!

Donate your time to the less fortunate! There are many activities and organizations that you can get involved with to help. Keep reading to learn more!

  • Donate food or help serve at a local soup kitchen or food bank. Find local volunteer opportunities at the Feeding America website.

More Activities:

  • Donate toys and books to shelters, churches, libraries or other organizations, such as Toys for Tots.
  • Visit the elderly at a nearby senior care facility. Learn about opportunities to become a visiting volunteer, party helper or holiday visitor with Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly.
  • Read to younger children at your local library. You can volunteer with your local Reading is Fundamental program.
  • Help clean up your neighborhood or community park. Learn about volunteer tree planting events with the Arbor Day Foundation.
  • Check out The National Audubon Society and learn more about birds and how you can help save wild species and wild places through activities such as collecting pennies and adopting a bird.

  • Promote conservation of the world’s cultural, historical, and natural resources by visiting The National Geographic Society.
  • The National Park Foundation helps to improve, preserve, and protect all of America’s amazing national parks. It even has a program for kids called Junior Rangers.
  • Find out how you can help to protect the Grand Canyon and save threatened polar bears by visiting the The Sierra Club.
  • Learn about conserving tropical rain forests, coral reefs, and endangered species. Speak out for wildlife and wild places around the globe through its World Wildlife Fund.
  • Volunteer your time at a humane society or animal shelter. Check out SPCA International for opportunities near you.
  • Volunteer your time at a local hospital or facility that supports families with sick children, such as Ronald McDonald House Charities. You can read stories to sick kids, help prepare meals for families, host movie and pizza nights, organize art projects for patients, clean kitchen and play areas, and assist in maintaining gardens and landscaping.
  • Get involved with an emergency response organization, such as Red Cross Youth. You can participate in disaster preparation in your local community; take first aid, water safety and babysitting training classes; help with blood drives; and learn about other cultures by assembling Red Cross school chests.
  • Help the homeless and join the Habitat Street Team. Habitat for Humanity is a charitable organization that works to eliminate poverty by providing simple, decent shelter to those in need. You can make a welcome basket for a homeowner family and help stock the pantry for a new homeowner family.
