Inhabitants of Dizzywood

Dizzywood’s bestiary is made up of four different types of creatures: ancients, monsters, sprites & bogies, and critters.  In addition to those indigenous creatures, animals from our world discovered portals to Dizzywood and began traveling there over a thousand years ago.  Upon discovering that the magic of Dizzywood gave them the ability to speak and walk upright, they set to work creating civilizations, fending off monsters, befriending sprites & bogies, and living in awe of the mysterious and powerful Ancients.  Humans have only discovered Dizzywood fairly recently, welcomed into the world by Presto the racoon.  Sadly, Simon Withering was one of the first humans to find the magical world and he’s been a bane to its inhabitants ever since.

ANCIENTS

Ancients are giant elemental titans who roamed the primordial land millennia ago.  They’ve slowly disappeared over the centuries, their whereabouts a huge mystery.  One theory is that the ancients have gone to sleep and have been mistaken for mountain ranges, hills, islands, and trees.  The last known Ancient was The Great Dizz, who disappeared into the forest without warning about ten years ago.

MONSTERS

Much less powerful than the Ancients are the foul monsters who stalk the land.  They range in size from small stink bugs no bigger than a mosquito to barn-size rock trolls who can destroy a city wall with one swing of its massive fist.  Some, like trolls, swamp monsters, and sea monsters are more malevolent than others.  Emperor Withering has made some effort to recruit many of these nasty beasts into his ranks of Underlings.  Fortunately, it is not in the largest monster’s nature to take orders and many have sent the Emperor’s messengers running in fear.

It’s recommended that citizens of Dizzywood avoid any encounters with monsters unless they are properly trained! 

SPRITES & BOGIES

Sprites and bogies are highly magical nature spirits.  They can take many different forms and some Dizzy University spritologists claim that they’ve seen a single sprite or bogie split into smaller versions of itself or come together to make a larger creature.  Sprites are more docile and playful, while bogies tend to be more wild, mischievous, and occasionally dangerous.  During the time of the Onakasi Empire in Tanglevine Jungle, the jaguar mages summoned large and powerful bogies, such as volcano and lightning bogies, to protect their treasure troves and sacred temples.

There is strong evidence that sprites and bogies are responsible for Elixir, the magical liquid substance that is the source of much magical power in Dizzywood.  For this reason, many wizards, as well as Dizzy engineers, set up shop near areas of heavy sprite or bogie activity.

There is still a lot that is unknown about sprites and bogies and Dizzy University is always on the lookout for smart young minds to help them in their quest to understand the strange and wondrous creatures.

CRITTERS

It’s difficult to go anywhere in Dizzywood without hearing the “meep meep meep” of a bunnycorn or the twittering song of a nest of flutterbirds.  Except in areas where Withering has set up shop, critters of all kinds scurry, crawl, and flap through all the lands of the world.  Humans who discover Dizzywood soon find that its critters love to follow them as they explore.

Sadly, one of Emperor Withering’s mad scientists invented an engine that runs on critter energy.  This corrupt reactor transforms the critters into crystal.  If any explorers find crystal critters in either the Onakasi Jaguar Temple or the depths of the Elder Vein Mines, they should bring them to Kan the Geomancer as soon as possible.  Kan has promised to restore crystal critters back to their original frolicking forms.
