The Underlings are Emperor Withering’s chief lieutenants…his henchmen, his thugs, his minions. In a misguided attempt to inspire them, Withering keeps a strict hierarchy among his henchmen, making sure that the top minions are given gifts and treated (somewhat) well, while those at the bottom of the ranking are constantly abused and subjected to all forms of hardship. This system has fostered an incredibly cut-throat attitude among the minions, with each vying for more power to move up in the ranks. The rank system also discourages any kind of team-work, much to the relief of Dizzywood’s citizens. If the Underlings were ever able to consolidate their resources, the cities and people of Dizzywood would be in quite a bit of trouble. As it is, the Underlings are too busy trying to win Withering’s favor and sabotaging each other’s diabolical plots.
Withering’s goal is to conquer Dizzywood and transform the land into an industrial wasteland he calls Witherland. However, due to Withering’s gross lack of management and people skills, the lieutenants tend to go off on their own and act out their own agendas. It’s only when Withering steers his black zeppelin near an Underling’s area of influence that they fall back in line.
The only known Underlings are Withering’s chief mad scientist Professor Plumpox who lives in a secret laboratory near Skytown, the swamp monster Grool Grubnibbler who lives in The Noxious Swamp, and The Rat Wraith an undead ghoul who lives in a haunted well in The Gnarl.
